that all reasonable steps are implemented to
promote the availabil ity of fuel oils that comply u~ ..l~yl wyjy.9y J:~ d.A..h.zllj ~LJ.I ...:,I~\
with this Annex. This includes ensuring the
fuel oil supplied to ships complies to the
MARPOL-mandated quality requirements,
notably the sulphur content in fuel oil, which
must not exceed 0.5% m/m on and after 1
January 2020 - unless the ship is fitted with
alternative means of compliance, typically an
exhaust cleaning system.

In response to the above, Abu Dhabi Ports has
issued guidelines on compliance to the
MARPOL Annex VI fuel quality requirements.
These guidelines are available on the website
and formally come into force on 31 December
2019.
The guidelines are primarily for the benefit of
licensed fuel oil suppliers. However,
purchasers of fuel oil for ships and their agents
should also refer to the guidelines and comply
with their associated obligations under
MARPOL Annex VI.
